So, about school….. I get it now you want to exit my blog. But algud, for the rest you who are brave enough to continue on reading. So for my assignment, the task is to analyse and write about three poems based on the same theme. The theme that I have chosen is racism. The first poem i have is called ‘don’t judge me for existing’ written by Verlena Dillard based on racism.
Racism. The one word that has killed our society, killed innnocent lives. One word that equals a thousand problems always starting from one thing, skin colour and race. 'Don't judge me for existing' was actually a great poem describing the struggles people with different skin colour or culture face being constantly harrassed and judged just because of that!
The use of poetic devices such as repetition and assonance really helped get a message accross to the readers. I really beleive the message was to the society and everyone judging different cultures that we are all the same. As quoted in the poem- "just push me into the mud, knowing we both have the same coloured blood". No matter what we look like or background we have, if you keep judging people and their race you will never get to find out what great features they have to offer. Just like a book, if you judge it by its cover you will never get to see what's happening on the inside which really matters and you will miss out.
The main poetice device that was used was repetition. For example the word 'why'. I think that repeating this word constantly made this poem sound powerful. When someone asks you why especially when its about a matter this serious and you dont really have an answer, it hits you like really badly because you begin to realise that what you have done is wrong. Just like this poem, when author Verlena Dillard repeated this word 'why' over and over again, it made the readers realise how badly people are affected by this kind of behaviour and it was also a big eye opener showing that these innconet people who are always judged just like that, not only become angry but they are extremely hurt, and the only thing they want to know is, why do you feel this way? Why is it that just because your skin colour is white, why do you have to be better than me? And its really disgusting hearing what people do say about it. Anyways thanks guys, heres the actual poem 'Don't judge me for existing' by Verlena Dillard. Enjoy and God bless
Why do you give me a hard look from your face?
that you don't like what you see?
that I'm from a different race?
Why can't we see eye to eye?
why do I disgust you,
like you don't wanna be near me
would you please tell me?
tell me why you hate me?
Do you hate me because of the color of my skin?
like I'm a disease?
you don't think I have desires?
that I have needs?
We aren't from the same race,
but by soul,
we live in the same world.
You may think I'm nothing,
just push me into the mud,
knowing we both have the same colored blood.
You can't judge me by my appearance,
or by my race,
or even the color on my face.
Say what you want to say,
you can't judge me,
for I didn't choose to be born this way.
